Tottenham Hotspur’s season has gone from bad to worse in the space of just a few weeks, so surely things can’t get even more severe?
Well, this week there have been reports coming out of Italy, via Tuttosport, suggesting that Serie A giants Juventus are plotting an audacious bid for Spurs skipper and leading talisman Harry Kane.
It comes shortly after a Telegraph claim stating that the Englishman would consider his future at the club this summer should they fail to earn any silverware once again.
Spurs are now out of all cup competitions and have lost five of their last six matches whilst they sit seven points adrift of the top four in the Premier League.
If the club does indeed miss out on Champions League football next season, it’ll hand Jose Mourinho a devastating blow to his finances as well as the attraction of the north London side.
So would it be wise to sell Kane in the summer? Transfermarkt value him at £135m currently.
Our writers run the mill over the potential bombshell…
Charles Jones
“Tottenham selling Harry Kane has the potential to be one of the worst decisions the club has ever made.
“The striker is undoubtedly the team’s most important player, and you simply can’t afford the club to responsibly spend any windfall they get from selling him.
“It’s an old drum to be banging, but look at how they spent the £85m they got from selling Gareth Bale, anyone who remembers the plights of Roberto Soldado, Federico Fazio, Paulinho and Vlad Chiriches will tell you just how wrong they got it.
“I’d love to be able to say they’re better at spending these days, but their business in the summer shows that Levy is awfully bad when trusted with large amounts of money. Tanguy Ndombele has been nothing short of a flop after being blasted by his own manager last week, and Ryan Sessegnon looks like a boy amongst men whenever he steps onto the pitch.
“Unless someone at Spurs can produce a fully costed transfer targets list filled with brilliant players they shouldn’t consider selling Kane to fund a rebuild.”
Harry Sherlock
“It’s laughable to consider the idea of selling Harry Kane. Spurs shouldn’t be letting him go to reinvest, they should be building around him. He is one of the very best strikers in world football and one only has to look at the form table to see how much they miss him when he’s gone.
“Anyway, who could they get to replace him? It’s not like a striker is sitting on the bench waiting for his shot, and Troy Parrott certainly isn’t ready. Any player with his sort of numbers would cost the Earth. The fact is that chairman Daniel Levy needs to put his money where his mouth is. He has said that funds have been “ring-fenced” for the summer, which suggests the budget is not entirely contingent on qualifying for the Champions League.
“That money needs to be spent well and it needs to bring in support for Kane. He’s integral to the project, to the club, and to the whole idea of this Spurs team winning trophies. Cutting him loose would be a disaster.”

“This may be a gut-wrenching decision for Spurs, but I’m afraid the time is right for Harry Kane to be cut loose. Had Mauricio Pochettino still been in charge, then it may have led to a different answer, but the fact Jose Mourinho has come in, makes it the perfect opportunity for Spurs to really start afresh.
“For all the progress that has been made over the past few years, the north Londoners continue to be burdened with the knowledge that they don’t have a trophy to show for it. Hitting the reset button and allowing Mourinho to invest the Kane money into players he wants could be the fresh momentum Spurs desperately need.
“You can just imagine Levy rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of getting well over £100m for someone like Kane.”
Lewis Blain
“If the Telegraph report is to be believed, then Kane’s head just isn’t in Spurs for the foreseeable future and you can hardly blame him. The club have gone from Champions League finalists to a side riddled by turmoil.
“At 26, Kane is entering the peak years of his career and will be all that more hungry to achieve success in his career. It would be a tragedy if he doens’t at least get to lift one major trophy, but to do so, he’ll have to leave north London soon.
“On the face of it, it would be a horrific bombshell for Daniel Levy to make, although it would provide plenty of funds that could be spent on the squad as a whole, which in turn would get them in contention once again. Kane must leave Spurs for the good of his career.”
