According to The Express, Paris Saint-Germain are ready to rival Real Madrid for Spurs’ Christian Eriksen having been linked with the Dane in the summer. Should the London club feel unable to ward off the interest, they should use it to their advantage in signing Adrien Rabiot.
What’s the word?
The former Ajax man is reportedly unhappy that he has not been granted wage parity with the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli – both have recently torn up the strict policy that has characterised Spurs for years after signing £200,000 and £100,000-a-week deals, respectively.
PSG are hoping that they will be able to tempt the playmaker into a switch to France by offering what will surely be a marked improvement on the £70,000-a-week he currently rakes in.
After losing Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, meanwhile, Real Madrid are looking to regain some extra star quality and so the two European giants look set to battle it out for the 26-year-old’s signature.
Spurs themselves, however, became the first team in Premier League history to not make any signings in a summer window as Mauricio Pochettino kept faith in the current crop. Although now that looks to be a mistake as the likes of Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen have succumbed to injuries and Poch is reportedly keen to offload the former in January to allow for new faces.
Rabiot’s the man
If Spurs cannot persuade Eriksen to turn down lucrative offers or, equally, refuse to give him appropriate wage increases then they should use the Ligue 1 champions’ keenness on the midfielder to boost their chances of signing one of theirs.
With Victor Wanyama deemed surplus to requirements and Dembele’s fitness rapidly deteriorating, the Lilywhites are in dire need of a new enforcer and have previously been linked with Adrien Rabiot.
The French international completes an impressive 2.6 tackles per game and has a passing success rate of 92.7%, compared to the Belgian’s 1.4 and 91.6%, respectively.
Famed for his strength on the ball and powerful dribbling, the Spurs man possesses a fairly unique skillset for a defensive midfielder – but not that unique.
Completing 0.8 dribbles per game, the 31-year-old is outmatched by his younger counterpart’s 1.1 and, at 6ft 2in tall, Rabiot has the physicality to be a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League (stats from WhoScored).
Additionally, the left-footer seems to have been sniffing out an escape route so little persuasion would be needed to convince him to leave the Parc des Princes.
A partnership with Harry Winks would prove fruitful for years to come and while key men like Kane and Alli would be disappointed to see Eriksen go, they would also be delighted if Rabiot replaces the Dane.
