Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has stated his desire to remain at White Hart Lane in order to fight for a first team place, but is he wasting his time and has his ship already sailed at the north London club?
This is what Jenas had to say about his future:
“I want to stay at White Hart Lane and fight for my first-team place.
“I am looking forward to the new season and I am fit and ready.
“Manager Harry Redknapp has built a great squad, we’ve got the prospect of Champions League football for the first time and I think we could win something.” (The News of the World)
The former Newcastle United player is quite a divisive figure amongst fans at White Hart Lane as some argue that he is simply not good enough and others say that his talents are a little underrated. But it would seem that overall he would never really be truly appreciated and could be best advised to seek a move away from the club.
In his defence he has been unlucky with injuries of late and when he did make appearances last season he was clearly not match fit, so it would perhaps be a little harsh to judge him off the back of last season’s merits. During the 2009/10 Premier League season Jenas only started 19 league games and scored just the single goal from midfield, but he had played the majority of games in the previous four years and usually chips in with a few goals.
Jenas has recently returned from injury but he seemed somewhat an isolated figure in the Lilywhites’ opening preseason game against Bournemouth and did not receive much of the ball, even though he was looking for it all the time.
Although he is willing to fight for his place and many would argue that it is only fair enough as he deserves the chance he may struggle to get into the first XI. With Tom Huddlestone, Wilson Palacios, Luka Modric and new boy Sandro all available to play in the centre of midfield it would be difficult for Jenas to break through even when you consider the club will have a more congested fixture list next term due to their involvement in European football.
As such a divisive player, whose mistakes are noticed above everyone else’s by fans who see him as one of the most frustrating players in modern history a parting of the ways may be best for all concerned.
However, the player seems reluctant to leave even though he may be nothing more than a squad player for the new season. This might have something to do with Tottenham’s involvement in the UEFA Champions League, a competition any player worth his salt would love to play in, and it is a competition he has tried to get into for so many years with the club.
What do the Tottenham fans think, should Jermaine Jenas stay or go?
