After a relatively quiet opening, Dortmund took the lead in the 22nd minute when Adeyemi buried a half-volley from the edge of the box in spectacular fashion.
Julian Brandt then fashioned a great chance for his side but nobody was there to bury his sumptuous cutback near the penalty spot.
Nico Schlotterbeck rifled a long-range strike just past the post for the hosts and then Pascal Gross had a goal ruled out just before the break due to being offside.
Lille improved after the interval and thought they should have had a penalty after Schlotterbeck made contact with Jonathan David, but their appeals were waved away.
The French side then scored with their first shot on target as Jonathan David neatly set up Hakon Haraldsson, who held his nerve to slot home in the 68th minute.
The visitors looked the more likely to grab a winner as the game wore on but neither team was able to fashion a clear-cut chance as the game ended in a draw.

Karim Adeyemi was arguably the best player on the pitch. He scored a stupendous goal in the first half and was a constant threat with his pace and trickery. Performances like these are why top European teams want to sign him.
THE BIG LOSER
While Dortmund as a whole put in a poor second-half performance after being in a good position to go on and kill the tie, Daniel Svensson was unable to continue as a result of a poor challenge from Lille's Angel Gomes. It remains to be seen if he will be fit for the return leg.
