CONMEBOL qualifiers are often considered some of the most difficult due to the loads of different conditions. However, one of the most difficult has always been playing against Bolivia due to their national stadium, El Alto's altitude of 4,150 meters above sea level. During Uruguay's 0-0 draw with Bolivia, Atleti star Gimenez was spotted needing to use oxygen from a canister to continue playing for his side.

El Alto's high altitude frequently poses a significant obstacle for visiting teams; in the past, FIFA has even tried (in vain) to limit games played over 2,500 meters. A few years ago, Argentina captain Lionel Messi had to be taken off by La Albiceleste after he vomited on the field due to fatigue related to the high altitude.
